Workshop on
New Technology Business Opportunities in
Ocean Related Applications
16 February 2010; 0900 Hrs: Rajendra Chola Hall, NIOT, Chennai

National Institute of Ocean Technology has been actively developing ocean related applications. Some of the ongoing activities involve the Low Temperature thermal Desalination plants, sub-sea systems for ocean bed mining, Remotely operable vehicles for sub-sea activities, and Low cost indigenous ocean observation systems.

Drinking water scarcity is higher in coastal regions in comparison with the interior parts of India; in coastal areas, the groundwater is saline and not suitable for drinking. Therefore, desalination of sea water becomes an ideal solution to bridge the widening gap between growing water needs of urban population and scarcity in supply in major coastal cities in India. Continuous efforts to amend the desalination technology have brought down the cost of desalination technique. As you aware, NIOT has been working on the desalination process for the past few years and has developed India’s first floating desalination plant. It is also the first of its kind in the world.

Ocean is considered to be a warehouse of mineral resources like Polymetallic Nodules, Polymetallic Sulphides, Cobalt rich manganase crust that to offer good potential to meet their ever increasing demand. As these minerals are available at 2000-6000 m depths, high pressure, soft sea floor, weather and environmental considerations pose great technological challenges. NIOT has been actively involved in development of technology, underwater sensors and non off-the-shelf underwater components for deep- ocean mining up to the depths of about 6000m.

As marine operations move into ever greater water depths and harsh environments around the globe, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) grow further in importance and the advance of such technology continues all the time. NIOT has developed a work class ROV (ROSUB 6000) with a depth rating of 6000 metres in association with Russian Academy of Sciences. NIOT has acquired expertise in designing the ROVs for various underwater applications and depths and looking forward to associate with Industry for developing these vehicles to meet the needs growing offshore activities.

The other area of interest is the development of indigenous ocean observation systems such as buoys that are useful in the weather and sea-state monitoring / prediction.

With a view to disseminate information on the new business opportunities in these areas of applications, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) & National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) are jointly organising the Workshop on "New Technology Business Opportunities in Ocean Related Applications" in NIOT Campus, Chennai on 16th February 2010 at 0900 Hrs for the benefit of the Indian industry as well as the civic institutions.

Objective of the workshop is

  • To promote the business opportunities in desalination related projects
  • To find the industry interest in other areas of NIOT activities
  • Facilitating the right linkages with the prospective industry members

This initiative would like to explore possibilities of transfer of readily scalable technologies in active collaboration with Industries and other relevant stakeholders.

As part of this program, NIOT experts will take the workshop delegates through the business processes along with a practical look at running of India’s first condenser reject water based desalination plant (NCTPS) at Ennore.

The target groups of the workshop are the middle and top management of businesses: manufacturers, traders, and distributors and of other subjects in the ocean development.

Delegate Fee:

There is no delegate fee for the workshop and the participation is restricted to 40 delegates. We would accept the nominations on first-come-first served basis. The background information and the tentative workshop schedule are enclosed for your kind reference and use.

We are cordially inviting you to attend / nominate your colleagues for this important workshop. Please confirm your participation/nominations through the enclosed Registration Form at the earliest.

Looking forward to your participation / nominations.
