DATED:
17.03.1998
ORDER:
The nation's Textile Policy was
last specified through the Textile Policy Statement
of June 1985. Prior to this, the development of
the Textile industry was guided by policy announcements
in March 1981 and August 1978. The stated objective
of the textile policy of 1985 was an increase in
production of cloth of acceptable quality at reasonable
prices to meet the clothing requirements of growing
population. In pursuit of this objective, the employment
and export potential of the industry were also
to be kept in view. The national policy is a broad
statement and covers every aspect of the textile
industry. However, in order to cater to the specific
needs of individual states, there is a felt need
for State Level Policy.
2.Accordingly, Government have
held wide ranging consultations with textile industrial
representatives and organistions including South
Indian Textile Research Association, South India
Mill Owners' Association, Tirupur Exporters' Association,
Handloom Export Promotion Council, Tamilnadu Powerloom
Federation and others. The views of related Government
Department and the State Planning Commission have
also been obtained. On the basis of this, Government
are pleased to announce the Textile Policy for
Tamilnady as annexed to this order.
3.This order is issued with the
concurrence of Finance Department vide its U.O.No.5382/FS/P/97,
dated 31.10.1997.
