LABOUR AND EMPLOYMENT DEPARTMENT
G.O.(Ms).NO.

DATED:
09.02.2005
ORDER:
In Tamil Nadu, at present, more
than 1600 Textile Mills are functioning. The
workmen in these mills are getting wages based
on the wage settlement with the managements and
also court orders. It is observed that during
the past three years, a majority of the Textile
Mills management retrenched the permanent workmen
and in their places appointed new workmen and
paying wages ranging from Rs.40/- to Rs.50/-
per day. In the Textile Mills where there is
no trade union is functioning, without observing
the Labour Welfare Laws the workers are being
given wages from Rs.10/- to Rs.30/- per day,
whereas the workers covered under the settlements
and Court orders are getting a wage of Rs.180/-
per day. In view of the above circumstances,
the Government consider it necessary to include
the employment in the Textile Mills to Schedule
I to the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 (Central Act
XI of 1948).
